<p>The method involves receiving base station identifications from receivable base stations (BTS) using the mobile telephone (M), and looking up base station position coordinates in a database (BTS-Pos). Test data is sent over a signaling channel to at least three base stations. Test data sent back is received by the base stations. Transmitted and received test data is compared to determine data transmission error rates. The distance to the base stations is computed in proportion to the error rates for transmission to individual base stations. The method also involves computing the current position from the coordinates of the receivable base stations and the computed distances to them. Independent claims are also included for the following:- (1) A mobile telephone with a program code arrangement for implementing the method. (2) A computer program with a program code arrangement for implementing the method.</p> |
