PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the increase of combustion noise of a variable compression ratio internal combustion engine which has increased combustion noise during changing its compression ratio not to possibly give anxiety to occupants. SOLUTION: The combustion noise generated during changing the compression ratio or a period for ignition delay due to the changed compression ratio is measured. When the combustion noise or the period for ignition delay is higher or longer than a predetermined target value, it is kept down to the target value by means of making the compression ratio somewhat higher and controlling at least either a pilot injection amount to be increased, the frequency of multiple injection to be increased or a main injection timing to be earlier.
