PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fiber raw material, such as rush, which can reduce the number of used rushes to lower the cost, can solve the problems of the so-called low price articles or chemical tatami-mats, has good surface strength, water resistance, abrasion resistance, weather resistance, stain resistance, and moisture absorptivity/releasability (moisture retainability), scarcely causes the breeding of ticks and molds, can easily be scraped and burnt or recycled, and is especially useful for tatami (mat) facings. SOLUTION: This fiber raw material is characterized by comprising the rush or kenaf obtained by coating the surface of the rush or kenaf with an alkoxysilane-based coating liquid and then curing/solidifying the coated coating liquid by the action of a catalyst. The obtained fiber raw material maintains the touch of the original fiber raw material, has the improved surface strength, water resistance, abrasion resistance, weather resistance, stain resistance, and moisture absorptivity/releasability (moisture retainability), prevents the breeding of the ticks and the molds, and can easily be scraped and burnt or recycled.
