PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heating method for an ordinary steel slab by which the actualization of intergranular oxidation which serves as the starting point of defects is prevented and the occurrence of linear scale defects caused in hot rolling and pattern like defects (unevenness occurring at plating ) is reduced by controlling atmosphere conditions in a furnace when heating the ordinary steel slab prior to hot rolling. SOLUTION: The ordinary steel slab as a hot rolling material which consists of, by mass%,≤0.20% C,≤0.1% Si,≤0.1% Mn,≤0.050% P,≤0.02% S, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, is heated in the atmosphere of 1.0-1.2 air ratio and within the range of 1,050-1,250°C slab heating temperature, so as to obtain a hot-rolled plate with few surface defects.
