PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an intermediate used in producing 2-methylindole-4-acetic acid derivatives which are useful as pharmaceutical intermediates, and to provide a method for industrially producing an indole derivative. SOLUTION: A tetrahydroindole derivative expressed by general formula (I) äthe bond composed of a solid line and a dotted line in the formula is a single bond or a double bond; R<SP>1</SP>is H, -SO<SB>2</SB>R<SP>3</SP>, -COOR<SP>3</SP>, -COR<SP>3</SP>, -(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>OR<SP>3</SP>or -(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>R<SP>3</SP>; R<SP>2</SP>is cyano, a carboxylate, haloformyl, -CO<SB>2</SB>R<SP>3</SP>or -CONR<SP>3</SP><SB>2</SB>; R<SP>3</SP>is H, a halogen, amino, a 1-6C alkyl, vinyl, allyl, phenyl or benzyl; and n is 1 or 2}. The method for producing the indole derivative comprises dehygrogenating the tetrahydroindole derivative expressed by general formula (I) in the presence of a dehydrogenating agent, such as quinone and chloranil, so as to form the indole derivative expressed by general formula (III).
