Strain gauge sensors (8,9.10) are fitted to all track and linkage rods of the steering mechanism. Each is connected with an on-board computer (11) which evaluates the tensile or compressive forces during steering. If the forces exceed a permissible level for the particular component an audible (12) or visual (13) signal to the driver to take remedial action is given. The computer can also control a pressure reducing valve (14) to relieve the stress on all the steering linkages.
