The method involves dividing the time interval for the display of an image into weighted sequential sub-intervals, and the brightness signals for the pixels of the image are generated by converting into activation sequences associated with the sub- intervals. The number of activation sequences is changed based on an input contrast change command. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for changing the contrast in a pulse-width controlled image display device.
