PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of forming a multilayer coating film having a favorable finish appearance with a low VOC, which is environmentally friendly. SOLUTION: The method for forming a multilayer coating film is carried out in a three-coat one-bake process by applying a water-based first color coating material (A), a water-based second color coating material (B) and a clear coating (C) on the object to form a three-layer coating film and heating and curing at one time. In this method, the water-based first coating material (A) has the following properties: After a coating film obtained by applying the water-based first coating material (A) having 20 to 60 wt.% solid content is preliminarily heated and/or set, the film shows≥1.0 Pa sec viscosity (at 20°C and≥0.1 sec<SP>-1</SP>shear rate) and 30 to 120 wt.% water absorption.
