An assembly tests the mechanical properties of paper or carton. The assembly has a basic frame and two tautening clamps (1, 4) in the test plane, a drive system, a measuring device and a data download interface. The first clamp (1) is fixed to the frame, while the second clamp (4) is coupled to the drive system, and is able to swing and slide through the test plane. The measuring device is coupled to either of the clamps or their attachment fixtures. The clamps are located in a vertical plane and may be moved relative to each other and the frame. Both (1, 4) are linked to a drive unit. The assembly further incorporates a cutter (3) which may be fitted at different positions.
