PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a moving picture reproducing apparatus for applying special reproduction such as slow reproduction, frame feed reproduction and still picture reproduction to an imprintable image with a simple method among many images stored on a tape or a disk in compliance with the MPEG system. SOLUTION: Am MPEG decoder 2 converts an inter-frame compressed image signal outputted from a reproduction means 1 for reproducing a recording medium such as a tape or a disk into a baseband image signal, an image display apparatus 5 displays the image signal and allows a memory 6 to store the baseband image signal equivalent to an image for a prescribed period among the baseband image signals. When a user finds out an image desirably viewed again among images displayed on the image display apparatus 5, the user selects an output signal from the MPEG decoder 2 to allow the image display apparatus 5 to output and display the image signal from the memory 6.
