PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical illuminator for observing fluorescence, which can, successively and over a wide range, adjust the light quantity of a plurality of beams of illumination light radiated to a specimen and which can be inexpensively constituted, and to provide a fluorescent microscope equipped with the vertical illuminator. SOLUTION: The vertical illuminator (11-19) for observing fluorescence, which illuminates a specimen 20 labeled with a plurality of fluorescent materials via an object lens 21, is provided with a light source means (11-14) for emitting illumination light, an extracting means 18 for simultaneously extracting a plurality of wavelength regions capable of stimulating each of the plurality of fluorescent materials out of the wavelength region of the illumination light, and an adjusting means 15, 15a for individually adjusting, by each wavelength region, at least either one of the area of the cross-section or intensity distribution on the cross-section when the illumination light with a plurality of wavelength regions passes a pupil plane 21a of the object lens.
