PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the wear of a thermal head during cleaning. SOLUTION: When a thermal head 21 is cleaned, a cleaning roll 16 is set to a printer 20. A cleaning sheet 10 is pulled out from the roll 16. The thermal head 21 is pressed against the supplied cleaning sheet 16. In this state, the cleaning sheet 10 is transported so as to reciprocate by means of each pair of conveying rollers 25, 27. The cleaning sheet 10 is provided with a cleaning layer containing photocatalyst in addition to polishing agent. The dirt is removed by sliding contact of the cleaning sheet 10 with the thermal head 21. When cleaning is started, an optical fixer 33 is lighted at the same time and the cleaning sheet 10 is irradiated by the light. Thus, the photocatalyst is activated, and the dirt of the thermal head 21 is decomposed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
