Redundancy of data being recorded on a CD is reduced. At the time of recording on a CD, for example, the bit pattern of a coupling bit is determined based on sub-data. A coupling bit having a bit pattern thus determined is inserted into a specified position of recorded and encoded audio data (and subcode). A code string thus obtained is recorded on a recording medium. The data can thereby be recorded such that subdata is embedded for the coupling bit essentially having no relation with the data.
