The harvesting machine is fitted with a unit (16) that controls (144) the height of the crop cutter and also the forward speed of the machine. The speed and height relationship values are retained in the controller memory. A hydraulic actuator (63) operates the crop cutter and has servo-valves (140) fed by drive stages (142) linked to the controller. The forward speed is provided by a hydrostatic drive.
