For handling cargo containers 24, Fig. 1, of various lengths, a master spreader 5 may engage the container directly, or if the container is too long for this, by means of a slave spreader 15, which is coupled to the master spreader by latching members 8-11. All the corner couplings are rotatable hydraulically between locked and unlocked positions by the linkages shown in Fig. 3, and each coupling incorporates a switch actuator 48 and guide rollers 31, 32, 45. Hydraulically operated guides 16 are provided on both spreaders for movement between a raised inoperative position and a lowered operative position. The master spreader 5 is self levelling by a ram 70 which moves a block to which suspension cables 73-76 are attached. Electrical and hydraulic circuits are illustrated, and quick release fastenings are provided between the spreaders for both electrical and hydraulic connections. Interlocks prevent the spreaders being raised until all the couplings are engaged. This condition is displayed in the operator's cab. |
