A digital copier which automatically prints and assembles complex documents mixing different media (e.g. ordinary and tabbed paper) and printing styles (e.g. simplex and duplex printing) by providing a printer driver which enables the printing path and paper being used to be varied in the course of printing a document. The printer driver (44, Fig. 2) comprises a print module (46, Fig. 2) and a set up module (48, Fig. 2). The set up module enables a user to enter format data (50, Fig. 2) associating pages in a document with formatting instructions such as the insertion of additional sheets of paper of the initiation of duplex or simplex printing, as shown. Tab format data can also be specified (Fig. 5).When a document file (42, Fig. 2) is processed by the print module, the print module identifies the boundaries of pages of the document to be printed and adds to a stream of data being passed to a printer additional instructions at the boundaries in accordance with the stored document format data. |
