[Also in Division D1] Filaments suitable for use in the bonding together of fabrics are produced by applying to a continuous flexible filament, e.g. a cotton thread, by extrusion, a continuous casting of a thermoplastic adhesive resin which may be a polyester resin and may have a softening point of 240- 260‹ F. and a flow point of 325-475‹ F. The thread 12 in Fig. 1 is unwound from spool 10 and led through an extruder 14 heated by electric band heaters 18 into which is fed particles or powder of thermoplastic adhesive from hopper 16, the hot melt being extruded from extruder nozzle 19. The coated thread 20 is cooled by passage through a cooling water bath 24, treated with a lubricant or drying agent, e.g. talcum powder, at 25 and wound on spool 26. When used for bonding together fabrics, the coated filament wound on a carrier may be rotatably mounted in an applicator having heating means adjacent its dispensing end so that the coated filament is adhered to the fabric where desired when dispensed from the applicator in a tacky condition, a second fabric being superimposed over the first and the fabrics then heated and pressed together along the line of the filament so that the thermoplastic adhesive is caused to flow and is absorbed into the fabrics. |
