Handbrake cable adjustment system

An apparatus and method for adjusting brake cables, such as handbrake cables of automotive vehicles is described. The apparatus includes a brake monitor (2) arranged to detect the position of a brake operating lever (10; 50) and a controller (16) to receive information from the brake monitor regarding the position of the brake operating lever, the controller also issuing instructions for adjusting the effective length of the brake cable (12, 12a, 12b; 48a, 48b) in order to adjust the position of the brake operating lever. The adjustment may be performed manually or by automated tool (18). The brake monitor (2) may be detachably mounted to the braking system. The braking system may include disc brakes or drum brakes. <IMAGE>
