An aromatic compound having 2 or 3 rings and in which a benzene ring is substituted by, or fused with, a five- or six-membered heterocycle having at least two hetero-atoms, is reacted with phosgene or oxalyl chloride in a melt of anhydrous aluminium chloride containing alkali metal or alkaline earth metal halides; -COCl groups are produced on the benzene ring, and may be subsequently hydrolysed to -COOH. Heterocyclic rings specified are oxazole, isoxazole, thiazole, imidazole, oxadiazole, thiadiazole, triazole, quinazoline, quinoxaline, pyrimidine, pyridazine and triazine. Halogen atoms may be present. Examples prepare the following acids: <FORM:0977697/C1/1> and also monocarboxylic acids derived from 2-phenylbenzoxazole and 2, 4-dichloro-6-phenyl-pyrimidine. |
