[Also in Division H2] A communication cable comprises a conductive core, a vapour barrier including a thin metal layer surrounding the core and bonded to a plastics jacket of sufficient thickness to provide mechanical support for the vapour barrier and having greater resistance to radial distortion than the vapour barrier. As shown, the vapour barrier 26 comprises transversely corrugated thin aluminium layer 40 with the corrugations filled with a graft polymer of carboxyl-containing monomers and ethylene, the assembly being strengthened by thin films 44, 46 of the same graft polymer. The preformed lamina is wrapped around the core with an overlapping longitudinal seam and the entire outer surface is heat-sealed to polyethylene jacket 28. Jacket 28 may be surrounded by metal, e.g. aluminium, shield 30 and extruded plastics sheath 34 of e.g. polyethylene, which may optionally be bonded to shield 30. The plastics jacket may be between the core and vapour barrier (Fig. 14, not shown), or two such jackets, one on each side of the vapour barrier may be provided (Fig. 9, not shown). In an arrangement using somewhat thicker aluminium for the vapour barrier (Fig. 5, not shown) the aluminium layer is sandwiched between two of the graft polymer layers prior to transverse corrugation of the lamina. A plurality of aluminium layers may be used, separated by graft polymer layers. The polymer layers may extend beyond the metal edge (Figs. 12, 13, not shown) and the longitudinal seam formed by the overlapping polymer layers. Alternatively, (Fig. 7, not shown) the lamina may be wrapped round the core twice. The transversely corrugated lamina may be bonded to the adjacent jacket or jackets at only the peaks of the corrugations (Figs. 15 to 17, not shown). In either of the constructions of the vapour barrier, it may be formed from a plurality of longitudinally overlapping strips (Fig. 11, not shown).
