A secondary fuel cell has an ion-permeable oxygen anode disposed between a hydrogen valve electrode and an oxygen diffusion cathode. The ion-permeable oxygen electrode may be connected in parallel with the oxygen diffusion cathode during discharge. As shown in Fig. 2, the hydrogen electrodes 20 and oxygen cathodes 21 are separated by oxygen anodes 23. Electrolyte is circulated by pump 29 and hydrogen formed during charging passes out of gas space 23 and is collected in pressure vessel 31 whilst oxygen is separated from the electrolyte in separator 32 and stored in container 34 with valves 38, 39 and 40 closed and 41 open. Sealing liquid 37 equalizes the pressure in the hydrogen electrodes and the oxygen cathodes, the pressure being kept above that in the electrolyte space by reference to manometer 42. Excess pressure in vessel 31 closes float valve 44 and opens valve 38 thus preventing hydrogen passing to vessel 36. During discharge valve 41 is closed and valve 40 is open. The preferred ion-permeable oxygen anode is a foraminous nickel sheet activated by spraying aluminium-nickel alloy on to the surface using a plasma jet and dissolving out the aluminium.
