PURPOSE: A catalyst composition for the polymerization of polyethylene and a method for preparing polyethylene by using the catalyst composition are provided, to obtain the highly active polyethylene having a super high molecular weight of 3,000,000-6,000,000 without the change of equipment. CONSTITUTION: The catalyst composition comprises a metallocene supported to clay; and a cocatalyst which is an organoaluminum compound. Preferably the clay is natural clay or ion exchanged clay. Preferably the clay is montmorillonite whose pH is 5 or less in aqueous solution. Preferably the organoaluminum compound is selected from the group consisting of trimethyl aluminum, triethyl aluminum, triisobutyl aluminum, dimethyl aluminum chloride, diethyl aluminum chloride, 2-ethyl aluminum chloride and diethyl aluminum ethoxide. The metallocene is represented by the formula 1, wherein M is a transition metal of group 4, 5 and 6.
