[Also in Division C5] Modified olefin polymers are prepared by intro - ducing at least one hydroperoxide radical into each molecule of a rubbery polymer of an α-mono-olefin having a viscosity average molecular weight of up to 500,000 and containing hydrogen atoms directly attached to tertiary carbon atoms, and reducing the thus hydroperoxidized polymer to a hydroxylated degraded polymer product having a viscosity average molecular weight of 10,000 to 150,000. Preferred polymers are ethylene/propylene copolymers and ethylene/propylene/non-conjugated diene terpolymers. Hydroperoxide groups may be introduced by oxidizing agents, e.g. oxygen gas and mixtures thereof, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide peracids, peroxides and cupric salts; and the reaction may be effected in the presence of conventional free radical initiators, e.g. peroxides and azo compounds; optionally in solution or suspension. The reduction, which may also be effected in solution or suspension, may be effected with triethyl phosphite, sodium sulphide, lithium aluminium hydride, sodium borohydride, tertiary phosphines, hydrazine hydrate, aluminium amalgam, hydriodic acid or zinc dust/acetic acid. The products are useful as viscosity index improvers in hydrocarbon oil compositions; if desired after halogenation with or without dehalogenation, sulphonation or sulphohalogenation. Examples describe the hydroperoxidation of ethylene/propylene rubbers with (1, 2 and 4) air and cumene hydroperoxide and (5) air and cumene hydroperoxide, t-butyl peroxide or nitrogen dioxide; and reduction of the products with sodium sulphite. |
