PURPOSE: An ink jet printer and a method for controlling the same are provided to allow a user to recognize a new ink cartridge when exchanging an ink cartridge by providing ink cartridge information to the user. CONSTITUTION: An ink jet printer includes a cartridge mounting section(10), a cartridge checking section(20), a control section(30), an ink detecting section(40), a storing section(50), a display section(60), an input section(70) and a printing section(80). The cartridge checking section(20) checks an exchange of the ink cartridge and outputs a signal to the control section(30). The cartridge checking section(20) includes a contact switch or a sensor making contact with the ink cartridge. The ink detecting section(40) detects an amount of ink remaining in the ink cartridge when a signal is applied thereto from the control section.
