The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropane, which comprises react- ing 2-chloroheptafluoropropane with hydrogen in a molar ratio of from 1:1 to 1:10 in the gas phase on a pal- ladium-, platinum-, ruthenium-, rhodium-, nickel- or copper-containing supported catalyst at temperatures of from 100 to 400.degree.C and pressures of from 1 to 50 bar.
