PURPOSE: A method for preparing a solvent-containing TDI (2,4- and/or 2,6-diisocyanatotoluene) trimer of low monomer content is provided, to allow a substantially monomer-free TDI trimer solution to be prepared without physical separation. CONSTITUTION: The solvent-containing TDI trimer is prepared by reacting 20-80 wt% of a diisocyanate component comprising 80 wt% of 2,4- and/or 2,6-diisocyanatotoluene in the presence of 20-80 wt% of a solvent, 0-20 wt% of an alcohol component and a phenolic catalyst component containing a dialkyl aminomethyl group at a temperature of 20-120 deg.C; adding 0.1-25 wt% of weighed 2,4-diisocyanatotoluene based on the amount of the used diisocyanatotoluene during trimerization; and adding a catalyst activity suppressor to terminate the reaction.
