A cleaning unit (11) can be moved along a guide (9) in an upper region of the room (3) containing the sanitary cells (7). The cleaning unit comprises a cleaning device (13) and a displacement device (15) for moving the latter up and down inside each cell. The cleaning device sprays a cleaning agent onto the walls of the sanitary cells and/or inside the toilet bowls (21). The same spray device (17) is used to spray the walls and/or toilet bowls with cleaning agent and then rinse them with water.
