PURPOSE: A method is provided to stabilize an engine state, while allowing for a continuously variable valve timing control even upon occurrences of breakdown of engine oil temperature sensor. CONSTITUTION: A method comprises a step(S2) of measuring an engine oil temperature and a coolant temperature by using an engine oil temperature sensor and a coolant temperature sensor; a step(S7) of determining a coil substitute temperature by using preset map data on the basis of engine oil temperature and coolant temperature; a step(S9) of controlling a continuously variable valve timing solenoid valve such that the overlap between the intake valve and the exhaust valve decreases, by decreasing the amount of oil being supplied to the continuously variable valve timing actuator when the coil substitute temperature is lower than the preset level; and a step(S10) of controlling the continuously variable valve timing solenoid valve such that the overlap between the intake valve and the exhaust valve increases, by increasing the amount of oil being supplied to the continuously variable valve timing actuator when the coil substitute temperature is higher than the preset level.
