Alkali metal phenates are prepared by rapidly and intimately mixing the corresponding molten aromatic sulphonic acid with a liquid alkali metal hydroxide of 50-100 weight per cent strength, the balance being water. Suitable sulphonic acids are benzene-, benzene-1,3-di- and naphthalene-1- and -2-sulphonic acids.
