A nut assembly 14 comprises a nut holder 30 moulded from synthetic plastics material e.g. nylon and having a socket 32 in which is positioned a nut 54, the socket having resilient arms 42 provided with radially extending fingers 44 which engage one end of the nut and prevent its withdrawal, and a bore 34 coaxial with the bore of the nut. The diameter of the bore 34 is such that on assembly of the nut on a screw-threaded rod 12, the rod forms locking threads in the bore 34. A parking brake cable 10 is fixed to one end of the rod 12 the nut serving to adjust the cable. The nut holder 30 has at one end a segmentally spherical surface 28 which bears on a spherical seat surrounding an opening 26 in an equalizer bracket 16 of a car brake linkage through which opening the rod 12 passes and permits the bracket to move angularly thus ensuring that the force applied to the cable 10 is equally distributed between the rear brake cables 18. The remainder of the nut holder body 30 is hexagonal in crosssection and has wrench receiving flats 38, Fig. 4 (not shown). Recesses 50 are formed in the walls of the socket between each pair of arms 42, each inwardly extending finger 44 having an inclined cam surface 46. In assembling the nut 54 in the holder 30 the edges of the end wall of the nut are placed on the cam surfaces 46 and the nut pressed into the socket. The end 56 of the nut is distorted to oval shape by inwardly displaced thread areas. |
