Thermoplastic gaskets in screw or press-on closure caps 9 (Fig. 1) for containers are heated by steam as the caps are fed towards the containers and the steam exhausted from the insides of the caps before they are put on the containers. In the form shown, the steam is supplied to the tops and bottoms of the caps through pipes 18 and bottom manifolds 26 and 27 respectively as the caps are guided down a shoot 8. After softening the gaskets the steam is exhausted through slots 21 (Fig. 3, not shown) into a port 22 leading to an outlet and some of the air around the caps is also exhausted. If it is required to seal the containers under a high vacuum, a tunnel 5 (Fig. 1) supplying heat to the tops of the containers may be evacuated by opening a valve 32 leading to the exhaust chamber 23. Alternatively, for low vacuum sealing the valve 32 may be left open and the exhaust outlet 24 closed so that the steam is re-directed to the tunnel 5. |
