PURPOSE: A method for estimating wear of a tire is provided to propose a tire wear estimation process that is easy to implement, on vehicles already equipped with anti-lock braking systems, which are more and more standard equipment. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling the functioning of a tire comprises steps of determining estimations or measurements of the slip and the coefficient of friction prevailing at the slip, for at least one pair 'i' of values; determining the value of the slope of the straight line passing through the origin and through each pair of values; calculating a coefficient by direct calculation or by a regression from a sufficient number of pairs of so as to estimate the value of slope at the origin; and using alpha0 in indicating the longitudinal stiffness of a tread pattern.
