A device to detect a slack rope condition of a hoist which uses wire rope as a hoisting means: The device has 2 pivoted members, one is clamped to the hoist rope and the other has a grooved portion which is pressed against the hoist rope by the action of an adjustable spring. When a slack rope condition exists a rotation of the grooved member on a piv ot takes place resulting in the tripping of a limit switch which may cut off lowering power and/or signal an alarm.
