A method for applying a hologram to a strip of material (7) in which a support strip (8) is carried over the material strip (7) and the hologram (40) is applied to the support layer (8) on to the material strip, by means of e.g. an adhesive layer (34) activated by the heating effect of an embossing tool (6). At the same time as the application of the hologram layer (33), the hologram (40) is generated by the tool (6) by embossing or similar. An independent claim is also included for a device for applying a hologram on to the material strip.
