Aqueous polymer dispersions (I) containing unsaturated monomers that may undergo polymerization with the help of suitable catalysts are prepared such that following polymerization the resulting polymer, swollen with at lest a portion of unreacted residual monomer, are mixed in a final step with surface active substances and water in which the product polymers are not fully separated from the residual monomers.
