PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having a high C/N (Carrier-to-Noise ratio), a low error rate, and excellent traveling durability. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer 1 including ferromagnetic powder and a binder on a nonmagnetic support, or having a nonmagnetic layer including nonmagnetic powder and a binder and a magnetic layer 2 including the ferromagnetic powder and the binder in this order is obtained. The magnetic recording medium has an undercoating layer including a clay compound coated with an organic matter and a binder between the nonmagnetic support and the magnetic layer 1 or between the nonmagnetic support and the nonmagnetic layer. The thickness of the clay compound coated with the organic matter is 0.5 to 5 nm and the aspect ratio thereof is 50 to 10,000. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
