A method for dissecting a vessel includes the steps of providing a surgical instrument (2) having a spoon retractor (10), making an incision in a patient, inserting the spoon retractor (10) into the incision, creating a working space in the tissue near the vessel being dissected, and manipulating the dissecting element (37) to dissect tissue surrounding the vessel being dissected.
