A method for fitting ballast weights to a mobile crane has some of the ballast (5) permanently fitted to the bottom end of the telescopic boom (10) and the remainder of the ballast (5') mounted on a storage platform (4) on the chassis of the vehicle. This provides a stable support for road travel. To assemble the full ballast weights the top part of the crane is swivelled through 180 deg. to align the weights over each other. The bottom ballast weights (5') are stacked on a support plate fitted with lifting eyelets. The top ballast supports are provided with ram driven hoists and lifting eyelets to couple to the lower support plate. The ram driven hoists include linked arms and eccentric drive cams.
