PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple and economical method for producing an epoxy compound, by which the epoxy compound can efficiently be obtained from an olefin with an inexpensive molecular oxygen as an oxidizing agent under mild conditions, and to provide a catalyst which can be used for the method, easily prepared and repeatedly used without deteriorating the activity. SOLUTION: This method for producing the epoxy compound is characterized by oxidizing the olefin with the molecular oxygen in the presence of a vanadium-carried catalyst obtained by carrying vanadium ion between the layers of a laminar compound and then calcining the product.
