<PICT:1070763/C1/1> <PICT:1070763/C1/2> To homogenize molten glass, the glass from a furnace 12 is passed downwardly through a downwardly tapered vessel 16 while stirring the glass by a stirrer 18 and then stopping rotation of the glass by passing it into a horizontal duct 20 and an upwardly inclined duct 22 to a discharge spout 14. The platinum lined vessel 16 has an upper extension 16a to direct the flow of the glass and the vessel 16 and ducts 20, 22 are surrounded by heating devices 25 to maintain the temperature of the glass for delivery from the spout 14. The blades 26 of the stirrer 18 are of such length as to lie closely adjacent the tapered walls of the vessel 16 and are hydrodynamically shaped to counteract the effect of the slower velocity of their root portions 28, the blades being widest and steepest in inclination at their roots 28 and narrowest and flattest at their tips 30. Preferably they also taper in thickness. |
