SIDE CURTAIN AIR BAG ASSEMBLY

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a side curtain air bag assembly for use in protection of an occupant within a vehicle which has a roof and a side structure below the roof.

SOLUTION: This assembly includes directional guide assemblies 152 and 152' including a dynamic guide element operatively connected to inflatable air bag curtains 110 and 110' which can be inflated to a direction away from the vehicle roof when the inflatable air bag curtains 110 and 110' are inflated to the direction away from the vehicle roof. Upon application of tensile force between the inflatable air bag curtains 110 and 110' and the dynamic guide element having a vertical force component projecting toward the vehicle roof and a horizontal force component projecting into the inflatable air bag curtains 110 and 110', the dynamic guide element is substantially locked into place at a predetermined position below the roof.
