PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound excellent as a component of a composition, having large optical anisotropy, and excellent compatibility with other liquid crystalline compounds; to provide a composition having general characteristics required for the composition, and large optical anisotropy; and to provide a liquid crystal display element containing the composition. SOLUTION: The compound is represented by the formula [wherein, Ra is a 1-15C alkyl or the like; A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>and A<SP>3</SP>are each independently 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or the like; Z<SP>1</SP>, Z<SP>2</SP>and Z<SP>3</SP>are each independently a single bond, -(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>2</SB>- or the like; n and m are each independently 0 or 1; phenyl having (F)<SB>p</SB>is phenyl, 2-fluorophenyl, 2,5-difluorophenyl, 2,3,5-trifluorophenyl, 2,3,6-trifluorophenyl or 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl].
