<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing hologram element of new configuration in order to achieve an improvement in the diffraction efficiency of the polarizing hologram element, an improvement in the degree of freedom in designing the polarizing hologram element and an improvement in its characteristics, stabilization of manufacturing process steps for the polarizing hologram element, a cost reduction of the polarizing hologram element and multifunctionalization of the polarizing hologram element. <P>SOLUTION: The polarizing hologram element 10 consisting of an optically isotropic substrate 11, an optically anisotropic material 13 formed on the optically isotropic substrate, an isotropic material 14 packed in the grating, a diffraction grating 16 of a rugged shape formed on the surface of the optically isotropic material, and an optically isotropic substrate 15 covering the surface thereof is so configured as to respectively vary the thicknesses of the substrates 11 and 15 facing each other, thereby improving the degree of freedom in designing the element and preventing the deterioration of the element characteristics by the distortion of the element. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
