<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element capable of performing satisfactory monochrome display and bright display, having stable memory properties having satisfactory contrast and free from pixel deviation (parallax) when viewed from an oblique direction. <P>SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element, a polarizing plate, a retardation plate, a front side substrate with transparent electrodes, a chiral nematic liquid crystal layer, and a rear side substrate provided with electrodes and an optical reflection plate are disposed in this order. The chiral nematic liquid crystal layer has a first state where incident light is selectively reflected to generate selectively reflected light and a second state where incident light is scattered. The selectively reflected light contains the wavelength in an IR region or a UV region and in the case of the first state, the visible light transmitted through the chiral nematic liquid crystal layer is absorbed by the polarizing plate. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
