<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized pointing device easy to manufacture, minimized in performance deterioration by wear, hardly influenced by an environmental condition such as dust, and applicable to portable communication equipment. <P>SOLUTION: A pair of Y-directional rotation detecting coils 17 and a pair of X-directional detecting coils 18 are arranged along the equator 14 and meridian 15 of a track ball 11 having a smooth spherical surface, with magnetized ranges and non-magnetized ranges being periodically arranged on the surface, respectively, in no contact with the track ball 11. The induced electromotive force generated in each pair of coils by the change in leak magnetic flux according to the rotation of the track ball 11 is transmitted to a rotation detecting means 13 through a coil connecting cable 16 to detect the magnitude and direction of rotation of the track ball 11. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
