The clotting of blood when it comes into contact with the surface of an article is prevented by coating or forming the surface with a gel containing 25-95% of water and a polyelectrolyte complex resin gel formed of two synthetic oppositely charged organic polyelectrolytes ionically cross-linked to each other wherein the resin gel has an excess of residual anion groups not involved in the ionic cross-linking. Suitably the resin gel is made from poly (sodium styrene sulfonate) and poly (vinyl benzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) and is prepared by mixing solutions of the polyanion and polycation in a mixture of water, sulphuric acid and acetone. Polycarbonate rings are coated with the resin gel. |
