The invention comprises compounds of formula Ar(CH2CH2O)nCH2CH2Z, wherein Ar is <FORM:1034193/C2/1> or <FORM:1034193/C2/2> n is an integer from 1 to 5, and Z is a group-NRR1 where R and R1 are alkyl groups or are connected either directly, forming a ring containing 4 or 5 carbon atoms, or by an oxygen atom or a free or alkylated nitrogen atom, or a group of formula <FORM:1034193/C2/3> wherein R11 is a C1- 6 alkyl group and X- is the anion of a hydrohalic acid, non-toxic and addition salts thereof, and their preparation by reaction of a compound of formula ArCH2CH2OCH2CH2Cl with an amine HNRR1 or an alkali metal salt of a compound of formula HOCH2CH2(OCH2CH2)mNRR1 wherein m is 0 to 3. b - (Guaiacol or thymol) - b 1 - chloro - diethyl ethers are prepared by reaction of an alkali metal salt of guaiacol or thymol with b ,b 1-dichloro-diethy ether. The compounds of the insertion have antitussive and hypotensive activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier. |
