PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make picture contrast satisfactory and shorten the depth of a back-projection type display unit. SOLUTION: Fine particles as a light diffusing material are not dispersed in the substrate of a lenticular lens sheet composing a transmission type screen 1. A liquid coolant is sealed in a space in a connector 9G between a transmission type cathode-ray tube 7G and a projection lens 8G. The inside of a housing 12 is colored in black. An image contrast ratio when outside light such as illumination light is present is equal to or greater than 70. In the case where a screen size has 35 inches between its opposite corners, a projection distance from the light outgoing/incoming face of the projection lens 8G to the transmission type screen 1 is approximately 560 mm, and the size of the transmission type screen 1 between its opposite corners is approximately 890 mm, and an angle of view is approximately 77°.
