A wear indicator for a clutch plate has a switch (21) mounted on the inside of a clutch housing and operated by the displacement of the thrust end of the hydraulic slave cylinder (11) with wear of the clutch lining. As the lining wears the diaphragm (6) tilts and its inner profile pushes the thrust bearing (7) back towards the slave cylinder. A radial extension (20) of the thrust bearing mounting operates the switch when the clutch lining has reached a preset minimum thickness. The switch operates a warning system on the dashboard, either a warning light or a buzzer. The level of wear can also be checked visually by removing an elastic seal (31) which takes the hydraulic line (13) into the clutch housing.
