PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low noise and high capacity magnetic recording tape suitable for a MR head, having proper traveling durability in addition to having a thin backing layer. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording tape comprised of a magnetic layer, made of primarily ferromagnetic powder and a binding agent on a support base, has a nonmagnetic layer between the magnetic layer and the support base, and a backing layer set on the reverse side. Surface lubricant indexes of the magnetic layer are 1.3-3.5. The backing layer contains titanium oxide, alpha-iron oxide or their mixture; inorganic oxide powder and carbon black, and furthermore, it contains a binding agent of 10-30 pts.mass, further the total mass of inorganic oxide powder and carbon black is 100 pts.mass, and the surface lubricant index of the backing layer are 1.10-3.0.
